FAQ

GST rate FAQs

What are the GST slabs in India after GST 2.0?+

Effective 22 September 2025, GST 2.0 rationalised the rates into a 5% merit rate, an 18% standard rate, and a 40% de-merit rate, alongside 0% (exempt). A niche 3% applies to precious metals. The earlier 12% and 28% slabs were largely merged into 5%/18% and 18%/40% respectively.

How do I find the GST rate for my product?+

Search by product name or HSN/SAC code above. The GST rate depends on the HSN classification, not just the common name, so confirm the description matches your supply. For borderline items, verify on the CBIC GST rate finder or with your CA.

What happened to the 12% and 28% GST slabs?+

Under GST 2.0 most 12% items moved to either 5% or 18%, and most 28% items moved to 18%, while a few luxury and sin goods moved to the new 40% de-merit rate. Some category-specific exceptions remain, so verify the exact rate for your item.

Is the GST rate the same across all states?+

Yes. GST rates are uniform across India. Only the split changes: intra-state supplies are charged as CGST + SGST, while inter-state supplies use a single IGST at the same total rate.

Can GST rates change?+

Yes. The GST Council revises rates and classifications through notifications. The rates shown here are commonly applicable values for quick reference — always confirm the current rate on the official GST portal before issuing tax invoices or filing returns.
