How discount and GST work together

  • Discount applies before GST

Under GST, a trade discount shown on the invoice reduces the taxable value. GST is charged on the price after discount, not before.

  • Then add GST

Apply the GST rate to the discounted (taxable) value. For intra-state sales it splits into CGST + SGST; for inter-state it is a single IGST.

  • Worked example

    List price ₹10,000, 10% discount → taxable ₹9,000. At 18% GST that is ₹1,620 tax (₹810 + ₹810), so the final amount is ₹10,620.

FAQ

Discount + GST FAQs

Is GST charged before or after discount?+

A trade discount shown on the invoice reduces the taxable value, so GST is charged on the price after discount, not the original list price.

How do I calculate the final price after discount and GST?+

Subtract the discount from the list price to get the taxable value, then add the GST rate. Example: ₹10,000 − 10% = ₹9,000 taxable; at 18% GST the total is ₹10,620.

Are all discounts deductible from the taxable value?+

Discounts recorded on the invoice are deductible. Post-sale discounts must meet specific conditions (such as being linked to an agreement and reversed ITC) to be deducted — verify with your CA.

Does this work for CGST/SGST and IGST?+

Yes. Choose intra-state to split the tax into CGST + SGST, or inter-state to charge a single IGST at the same rate.
